How much BCAA should I take per day?
Good question, and one that needs to be explained in more detail. In general, research and global sports nutrition guidelines reference broader BCAA intakes around training. However, in Australia, supplement dosages are regulated by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) under Standard 2.9.4 and Schedule 29, which set strict limits on the amount of individual amino acids that can be added to formulated sports foods.
Rather than regulating a total “BCAA dose,” FSANZ places specific daily limits on each amino acid component to ensure safety and responsible formulation:
- L-Leucine: Maximum 490mg
- L-Isoleucine: Maximum 350mg
- L-Valine: Maximum 350mg
hese limits apply specifically to added free form amino acids, not the naturally occurring amino acids found in whole protein sources such as whey, milk or soy.
How this affects Uprotein BCAA 4:1:1 dosing
Uprotein uses a premium 4:1:1 BCAA ratio, meaning leucine makes up the largest proportion of the formula, as leucine is the primary driver of muscle protein synthesis.
Because leucine represents four parts of the blend, our labelled serving size is carefully calculated to remain fully compliant with FSANZ regulations, while still delivering meaningful training support.
This is why the recommended serving on pack provides 732mg of BCAAs in a 4:1:1 ratio, ensuring regulatory compliance, ingredient transparency and responsible formulation.
What does this mean for your training?
Your daily BCAA intake also comes naturally from:
- Protein powder
- Whole food protein sources
- Everyday meals
These naturally occurring BCAAs are not restricted under FSANZ regulations and play a major role in overall amino acid intake.
Supplemental BCAAs are designed to provide targeted support around training, particularly for hydration, endurance and intra-workout recovery, rather than acting as your sole amino acid source.
For best results, use BCAAs during training, alongside a high protein diet and quality protein supplementation.
